AI-Assisted Airspace Authorization
for First Responders
System Architecture
End-to-end flow from pilot mobile request through AI extraction, FAA submission, and real-time status broadcast to the Situation Room. Deployed on NIST 800-53 High Baseline-compliant AWS ECS infrastructure.
What I Designed & Built
- LLM integration (Claude via AWS Bedrock) — prompt architecture and structured output contract that parses free-text incident descriptions into validated FAA waiver payloads reliably
- Geocoding pipeline — multi-strategy location resolution combining AWS Location Service and Google Maps, with vector displacement math for relative references ("400 feet west of the water tower")
- Iterative extraction flow — multi-turn API pattern that surfaces missing fields back to the pilot for progressive clarification without losing context
- Waiver lifecycle automation — full pipeline from AI extraction through FAA email submission (SES), inbound approval parsing (SNS/SES), and real-time status broadcast via WebSocket + PostgreSQL LISTEN/NOTIFY
- Voice escalation — Amazon Connect + Lex automated outbound calls to the FAA when email replies exceed the expected response window
- Situation Room portal — WebRTC multi-party conferencing (Chime SDK), live drone video over RTMPS (Amazon IVS), and inline METAR and NOTAM feeds
- Compliant infrastructure — NIST 800-53 High Baseline-compliant AWS ECS with Secrets Manager
Waiver Creation Flow
Pilot submits a plain-language request. The AI extraction pipeline parses it, resolves location, and assembles a structured waiver — surfacing any missing fields for clarification before submission.
FAA Submission & Email Approval
Completed waiver submitted via AWS SES. Inbound FAA replies parsed through SNS/SES to extract the NOTAM authorization number and push a real-time status update to the pilot.
Outbound Voice Follow-Up
When FAA email approval exceeds the expected window, Amazon Connect + Lex places an automated outbound call on the pilot's behalf — no manual dialing required.
Situation Room Portal
Real-time operations portal giving pilots, FAA agents, and commanders a shared view of the incident — WebRTC video conferencing, live RTMPS drone feed, GPS tracking, and inline airspace and weather data.
